Following CDPH Guidance for Local Health Jurisdictions on Isolation and Quarantine of the General Public, students exposed to COVID-19 should get tested within three to five days of their last exposure. If symptoms have resolved or disappeared by day five, and a diagnostic specimen collected on day five or later is negative, then isolation can be lifted. Children exhibiting signs of COVID-19 should be evaluated and asked to wear a mask in school.
If a student's initial test comes out positive, they generally isolate themselves and retest in 24 to 48 hours. After long breaks, both students and teachers should be tested for the influenza virus (COVID-19) due to the increased risk of exposure due to increased travel and social connections (e.g., summer, winter, spring). Patients in high-risk groups should undergo asymptomatic testing during COVID-19 epidemics, outbreaks, or widespread community transmission.
